The borough of Welwyn Hatfield is located centrally within the county. Welwyn Hatfield Borough contains two new towns and several surrounding villages. Welwyn Garden City is one of the first ‘Garden Cities’ established by Ebenezer Howard in the early 1920’s. It has been further developed to include; The Howard Centre, the main focus for retailing in the town centre alongside John Lewis plc. Hatfield is famous for the British Aerospace aircraft manufacturing plant. When the plant closed in 1993, Hatfield suffered economic decline. Today the site of the Hatfield Aerodrome is a large key employment site in the County.
