Work Experience and Work Related Learning

Supporting key stage 4 and 5 learners

Employment and Skills Co-ordinators engage employers to support your students, giving them a glimpse into the world of work and, therefore, enabling them to draw on these experiences when making future choices and career paths. Employers are willing to offer their time and experience in many ways.

Work Experience Options

Block Work Experience - Introduces students to the world of work, choosing an employer from a broad range of sectors and giving them the opportunity to spend a week as a member of staff.  Gaining the basics of punctually, following instructions and being part of the workforce.

Bespoke Work Experience - Placements specifically found to support the attainment of a qualification or a course being studied.  These can be focussed on curriculum needs and can be offered in the majority of sectors. Programme duration can be amended as necessary to meet the needs of students.

Extended Work Experience - Tailored to a student's area of interest, these placements are one or two days a week across the academic year. Students get to experience working in more depth, gaining valuable skills for the future.

Mini Extended Work Experience – 5 week trial of an extended placement where a student has the opportunity to try out a placement before they and the school commit to a long term placement.

Work Related Learning Options

Mock Interviews – employers support an interview day or half day in school.  Employers can be chosen covering broad sectors or be sector specific.  Following each interview the employer provides feedback on interview techniques, language, dress-code and presentation.

CV Workshop – focuses students on their achievements, skills and qualities to enable them to put together a concise CV ready for today's job market. They can get feedback from employers on what they are looking for in a CV.  It can also include writing a covering letter to support their applications.

Careers Carousel - Workshops delivered by employers that introduce students to the skills required within their industry sector. Groups of 3 or 4 students have 10 minute sessions with each employer outlining the day to day job role, the necessary qualifications, skills and progression opportunities. This is an opportunity to inspire your students, they can ask questions and learn more about their area of work.

Careers Fairs – We can organise your careers event.  We can introduce local and national businesses providing a face-to-face opportunity for students to meet employers and understand their sector and recruitment processes. Students are given the chance to speak at length with the employers discovering the qualifications, skills and attributes necessary in their field.

Employer Visits – Students are given the opportunity to visit an employer premises and hear from staff members about their working day, routes into their particular sector, focussing on key employability skills and ending with a tour of the building.  These visits can be grouped (2 or 3 employers in the same sector allowing for comparisons) or be based around a broader range of sectors.
