Young people in East Herts and Welwyn Hatfield turn to dance to boost their wellbeing

19 July 2022

Youth Workers in Services for Young People’s East Herts and Welwyn Hatfield teams challenged the young people at their projects to get dancing to boost their mood and physical wellbeing.

At the Services for Young People (SfYP) Welwyn Hatfield projects 118 young people took part in self-care and meditation workshops, alongside street dance sessions with a qualified instructor, something the young people had asked for as an upbeat antidote to the stressors they have been experiencing during the pandemic. They also learnt how exercising releases endorphins and the ‘happy hormone’ serotonin and helps reduce stress levels. Giving the young people the opportunity to share positivity, celebrate ‘being yourself’ and talking about what that means to them, helped them to consider how they can be kinder to themselves and practice self-acceptance.

A participant said: “It made me reflect on what I can do differently” and “It uplifted my mood!”

In Bishop’s Stortford the young people organised a dance project for their peers to build confidence and breakdown negativity around body image and stereotypes. Young people with a passion for dancing led the sessions and made them very welcoming for the others by supporting those who were not as confident, ultimately achieving their goal of persuading everyone to participate, whatever their ability and appearance. Supported by a youth worker who is also a trained dancer, they developed a choreographed dance. One young person who was initially very shy participated and did a short solo routine.

He said: “I know I am not slim, and it sometimes stops me performing. During the project I gained confidence and surprised myself that I was able to do a solo in front of a small audience. I now feel confident to perform and express myself regardless of my appearance.”

If you are a young person who wants to find out more about how you can boost your self-esteem, confidence and sense of wellbeing, come along to one of Services for Young People’s emotional wellbeing projects or a Supporting You project in your local area.
