Services for Young People (SfYP) provides a range of support for care leavers and separated migrant young people up to the age of 25, helping them make a successful transition into adulthood. Our Advisers and Youth Workers help them identify their goals and focus on how to achieve them.
Alamin, who is 21 and studying for his Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Plumbing, was referred to SfYP by the HCC Care Leaver Service. He was allocated a dedicated SfYP Employment and Training Adviser, Jane, who worked with him to create a CV. This was sent to relevant companies requesting a work experience placement which would give him hands on experience and increase his knowledge of different aspects of plumbing and repairs. The placement was also a requirement of his qualification. The Social Value Manager at Cardo Group, Nadia, was quick to respond and, after a successful interview, Alamin was offered an extended work experience placement with the company. Cardo Group is a provider of building maintenance and retrofit services for social housing and public sector buildings.
Alamin joined Luca, a Cardo Repairs Operative (plumber), every Wednesday for 15 weeks. Throughout the placement he was able to observe a wide variety of plumbing works carried out in tenants’ homes and support with some minor repairs. He also joined the company’s regular ‘Tool Box Talks’ sessions where information about procedures and health and safety practices is shared with Cardo operatives.
Alamin made a great success of his work experience opportunity and got some fantastic feedback:
Scott, Repairs Supervisor at Cardo
“It’s been a pleasure to have Alamin as a member of the team. He is enthusiastic, helpful, willing to learn and get stuck in and has a great work ethic. It has been a pleasure to be his supervisor.”
Luca, Repairs Operative at Cardo
“Alamin has been great to work with, he is always wanting to get involved and learn more about the work. He is confident in his abilities as a plumber and does ask questions when he comes across something new.”
Nadia, Social Value Manager at Cardo
“Alamin has been a pleasure to work with and support during his extended work placement. He communicates well, his timekeeping is excellent, and it is wonderful to see that he is making the most of this opportunity by using it as a means to increase his learning and gain valuable experience. Overall, Cardo was delighted to have been given the opportunity to support Alamin and on a personal level I am delighted to see and hear that Alamin’s placement has been such a success. I’m sure he will do very well in the future.”
