St Albans Youth Council supports local foodbank with Christmas boxes

12 December 2024

Young people from the St Albans Youth Council have come together to make a real difference in their local community this festive season.

Members of the Services for Young People (SfYP) St Albans Youth Council chose to give back to their community by supporting the St Albans and District Foodbank at Verso Vineyard Church this month. Wanting to provide extra support to people using the foodbank at Christmas, the young people raised money to make Christmas boxes full of toys, essential food, toiletries, festive treats and gifts, all carefully packed and ready to be given to those in most need.

The youth council members took ownership of the project which gave them a sense of responsibility and showed them the impact they could have on the lives of others. Taking part also helped build their confidence and leadership skills.

The young people put up posters in schools to encourage others to get involved and received donations from family, friends, neighbours, SfYP staff, and a local business. The staff at St Michael’s Manor hotel in St Albans (pictured) generously donated two full boxes after hearing about the cause from a youth council member completing work experience there.

The St Albans Youth Council not only supported a vital community resource, but also learned about the challenges faced by families living in poverty. Their efforts show the power of social action, and the positive impact young people can have when they come together to help others.
