Services for Young People works with Hertfordshire schools to set up work-related learning opportunities and work experience placements for their students. Engaging with employers is crucial in developing young people’s knowledge of the 'world of work', allowing them to make informed decisions about their career path.
The visit to Hanbury Manor in Ware began at 10am when the students were warmly welcomed by two members of staff at the hotel and guided to a training room. Here, they received an engaging presentation about the growth of the Marriott Hotel chain, which began as an inflight catering business and evolved into a global hospitality leader. The students also learned about pathways into employment with Marriott, including part-time roles and apprenticeships.
Following the presentation, the group was divided into two teams and took part in a quiz to identify the 11 career sectors within Marriott. The staff praised the students’ enthusiasm and quick thinking in completing the task.
The students were then treated to a tour of Hanbury Manor’s historic chapel, adorned with statues of monarchs and famously visited by Henry VIII. The space, now used for weddings and events, was set up for a function, and a staff member demonstrated the art of laying a proper place setting. The students eagerly competed in pairs to create the most polished setup, showing impressive attention to detail.
Next, the group visited one of the hotel’s luxurious guest rooms, where a staff member, demonstrated the meticulous process of making a bed for guests. The students learned tips such as folding pillowcases for a perfect fit and were then split into groups to practice bed-making themselves—a first-time experience for many.
The tour concluded with a walk through the hotel grounds to the pool and spa, where the students viewed the facilities and several expressed an interest in working in this part of the industry.
The visit left a positive impression on both students and staff. As the morning wrapped up, it was clear the students had gained valuable insights into the world of hospitality, while hotel staff enjoyed sharing their expertise with the next generation.
This enriching experience highlights the importance of partnerships between educational institutions and local businesses in inspiring young people to explore diverse career opportunities.
