In 2023 the Go Wild at Hudnall project delivered by Services for Young People (SfYP) supported over twice as many young people to connect with nature and improve their wellbeing compared with 2022.
Go Wild at Hudnall gives young people who are at risk of, or living with, emotional wellbeing issues the opportunity to take part in therapeutic activities at Hudnall Park near Hemel Hempstead. Through weekly outdoor sessions they learn about nature and gain practical skills, while also improving their self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience. They also learn mindfulness techniques to help them manage their emotions.
The Go Wild Team also organises events for young people and their families during school holidays. Last year, these included butterfly and bee surveys, campfire cookouts and the opportunity to observe badgers, bats and moths at night.
The feedback the team received highlights how the young people benefit from the sessions.
A parent said, “A fun, practical session that inspired and encouraged teamwork, resilience, confidence and social skills.”
Local teachers and other professionals working with young people commented on the flexibility and adaptability of the SfYP Go Wild People and Wildlife Officers in catering for the unique needs of those with social, emotional and mental health challenges.
The young people also gave positive feedback, saying:
“Thank you so much for these sessions, I really enjoyed them… I wish we had more time here.”
“It makes me feel calm.”
“It is my favourite day of the week.”
Another part of the Go Wild at Hudnall project is the Youth Volunteer Conservation Project. As reflected in the latest Hertfordshire Residents Survey results, understanding and taking care of the natural environment is a priority for young people. This project offers a monthly opportunity for young people aged 13 to 17 to improve the wildlife habitats at Hudnall Park. The volunteers who took part in 2023 learnt practical nature conservation skills at the same time as improving their physical and mental wellbeing.
SfYP will be delivering Go Wild at Hudnall sessions in Spring 2024, both during term time and school holidays, as well as the monthly Youth Volunteer Conservation Project on the second Saturday of each month.
