The partnership with Services for Young People (SfYP) and First Rung began when members of the SfYP St Albans and Dacorum Team met with First Rung’s CEO, Steve Woolcock, to discuss the lack of training provision for young people in the area. The outcome of the discussions was that First Rung will deliver a range of accessible training courses at SfYP’s Hemel Hempstead Young People’s Centre with SfYP practitioners providing individualised support to the young people.
SfYP Advisers will offer impartial careers education, information, advice and guidance to help the young people onto the most appropriate course. They will also facilitate encounters with employers and support the young people into their next steps after the course. At every stage they will support the young people to build their skills and confidence and overcome any challenges they may be facing that would affect their transition into further education or employment.
The training programme is for young people aged 16-18 who would like to complete Level 1 in Business Administration alongside functional skills or GCSEs in English and Maths and learn essential digital skills needed for the workplace. The training and support are available to young people aged 16-24 if they have an EHCP. No formal qualifications are required. The programme is tailored to individual learning needs and progression goals.
The partnership is set to make a significant difference to young people in the area and ultimately reduce the number of young people who are not in education, employment or training. The provision of accessible, local training by an experienced training provider working in collaboration with supportive and professionally qualified SfYP practitioners will maximise the young people’s chances of making a successful transition into adulthood.
