Parents who have adopted young people aged 10 to 17 and young people within adoptive families can join the supportive community to connect with others, receive information and advice, and enjoy activities designed for both parents and young people.

Services for Young People (SfYP) will be delivering a weekly youth work project specifically for young people aged 11-17 within adopted families. This project is designed to boost young people’s confidence and self-esteem, and help them develop their social skills, relationships and emotional wellbeing through activities including cooking, sports and music. The young people will be able to access the full range of services, support and opportunities provided by SfYP.

A youth work project taster session will be happening on 23rd June 2025 at Waltham Cross Young People’s Centre. Adopted young people aged 11-17 can come along to the session to meet our friendly youth workers and get involved in workshops, sports, music, art and more.

In addition, the Adoption Support Service will provide:

Peer support from a Hub Carer
Parents can chat with an experienced adopter in person, on the phone or via messaging. They will answer questions and offer practical advice and signposting to other services and support if needed.

Twice a month face-to-face or online parent meetups
These meetups provide a friendly space to chat, reflect and share experiences. Parents can join discussions on adoption, teen behaviour and parenting. There is also a parents’ WhatsApp group.

Family gatherings at Hertfordshire adoption events
Parents and young people can attend annual Hertfordshire adoption events, which further build friendships and strengthen family bonds.

Non-violent resistance (NVR) sessions/consultations
Facilitated by advanced trained practitioners, this is a therapeutic programme to reduce aggression and control, helping to build stronger parent-child connections.
